Roy Keane claims he’d play a Man United reserve or YOUTH player over Casemiro in defence after Crystal Palace loss – and lashes out at his Red Devils team-mates for leaving him exposed

Roy Keane slammed Casemiro’s central role in Manchester United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat Monday at Crystal Palace.

He also fell out again with Ian Wright after the two clashed last month in an argument over Bruno Fernandes and whether the Red Devils captain is a good influence in the club’s dressing room.

Keane was particularly scathing about Casemiro’s performance during the match as he was involved in two of Palace’s four goals on the night – and also criticized his Man United teammates for not helping him.

In the latest episode of the Stick with the football podcastThere was a heated discussion about Manchester United, led by the Irishman ‘Casemiro is the last player you would want to play as a centre-back against Palace’, following the recent goalscoring form of Oliver Glasner’s side, scoring five times against West Ham and even twice against Man City – but admitted the Brazilian defender did have a ‘shocker’.

He later added: ‘Of all the players at Manchester United, including the reserves and youth team, if there was one player I wouldn’t play as a centre-back against Crystal Palace, he would be the one I wouldn’t play. Aaron Wan-Bissaka or someone else!’

Keane added: “Casemiro was isolated. He became isolated through his own fault, because he didn’t have people around him, and you have to take responsibility for that.

“But when we talk about a team game, structure-this and structure-that, playing between the lines, that’s all well and good, but when you play against it you need your teammates around you. There’s the whole idea of playing on a team.”

The Irishman also commented: ‘I was watching Casemiro the other day and he was struggling but he didn’t get any help from the other players. If your legs move a little, you will get people around you [to help]and that’s where he should have done better with his experience.

‘But defensively he didn’t get any help from anyone. Defensively they were everywhere!’

Fellow podcaster Jamie Carragher had a brutal assessment of Casemiro’s performance against Crystal Palace, telling the Brazil captain to ‘get it over with’ – which Wright previously opposed.

Wright told the podcast: “I remember watching [Casemiro vs Palace] and I’m always fighting someone in the paper, whether it’s you [Gary Neville]you [Carragher] or you [Keane]people always digging me and saying, “What is your buddy talking about now?!

‘I was thinking about it myself when I got to the end and people said, “You’re done, it’s over.” We are talking about a player who is a Brazilian captain, only 32 years old and in a team with no structure, and he just sits in the space and is exposed. I just had the feeling, alone at that moment, like in League Two [Keane’s previous comment on Man City’s Erling Haaland] it just takes it to another place.

‘At the same time, you look at his career and how well he’s done, but when you’re so exposed you think, “What can he do?!”

Keane made headlines in March for his scathing criticism of Man City’s Norwegian striker, who he slammed for his overall play at a time when he was struggling for form.

Wright and Keane also clashed afterwards over a discussion about management styles Glasner’s Crystal Palace side put in a great performance against Erik ten Hag’s Man United.

Wright, who was on Palace’s books from 1985 to 1991, said: “I think to myself [ten Hag]What else is that manager going to do? [With Glasner] In 13 games, look at Palace, they have changed.

‘Obviously they went along [Frank] the farmer. It did not work. Then they went to Roy [Hodgson]. They then went with Patrick [Vieira] and it didn’t work. Back to Roy.

“They want to do something where they can go somewhere else and they have now found a manager who has also won things. Let’s be honest. And look at the Palace team -‘

Keane interjected here: ‘Are you comparing Crystal Palace to Man United? Where do Palace stand in the league? Palace are doing well at home.’

“Yes, but Palace have just changed managers,” Wright replied.

Keane asked: ‘So Palace have all the answers then?’, before speaking angrily about the former Arsenal legend. “Do you know why they’re doing well, Palace? They have two of their best players playing. They have two very good players. Palace are fourteenth in the league, so don’t get too excited about Crystal Palace.’

Wright replied, “Yes, I don’t care where they are. It has nothing to do with getting excited about Crystal Palace. What I’m excited about at Palace is that their manager is making a change.”

Manchester United will take on Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton in their final Premier League games as they look for a European place, while Crystal Palace will take on Wolves and Aston Villa.
