‘I’m tired of saying it!’: Roy Keane blasts David De Gea and insists Man United ‘need a new goalkeeper’ after FA Cup final defeat to rivals Man City… claiming that Erik ten Hag’s side also ‘needs a world’ class striker’
Roy Keane has insisted Manchester United ‘need a new goalkeeper’ following their FA Cup final defeat to rivals City.
Erik ten Hag’s side were beaten 2-1 on Saturday afternoon after a thrilling match at Wembley, after Ilkay Gundogan tied the score in City’s favor with a brace.
There were questions about De Gea’s role in both goals, especially the second, as he seemed to allow the German’s attacks quite easily.
After the game, former United captain Keane bombarded the Spaniard, offering his advice on what the club should do over the summer.
“United need to find a new goalkeeper,” Keane exclaimed. They need a world-class striker and a new goalkeeper.
“They need some other players and some strength in depth, but they need a new goalkeeper and a world-class striker. I’m tired of saying that.’
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright concurred, saying: “They should at least get a goalkeeper. We’ve seen some big mistakes from him this season and they need at least a goalkeeper to push him.
“So if he’s going to make those mistakes, they’ll have someone who can come in and then it’s their turn.”
Wright was particularly critical of De Gea’s role in City’s winning goal. Gundogan’s volley was smashed into the ground, with no real tempo, but he still beat the Spaniard.
“He made a lot of mistakes,” Wright continued. “But it’s the kind of shot that bounces two or three times before it reaches him, which says maybe his positioning wasn’t right in the first place.”
Keane continued his analysis. He said: “That’s the problem with top goalkeepers, they get you over the line in certain games and could have made the difference today.
“You expect your keeper to save that and he didn’t and that’s why we see these parties. For Man United they need a world class goalkeeper and he’s not’
