Roy Keane has bemoaned the summer briefings out of Manchester United crediting the players for training properly.
Speaking ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first competitive fixture as the United boss, Keane implored the manager to ensure that the culture at the club changed under his tutelage.
Keane had a look of bemusement etched across his face when referencing the ‘noises’ that had come out of the club this summer regarding the players training hard and on time.
Roy Keane bemoaned the club’s ‘PR’ machine for pumping out positive narratives this summer
The former Manchester United captain said: ‘There’s noises coming out about pre-season, a lot of PR from United about how the players have embraced him (Ten Hag), they’re training on time, they’re training properly. Praise the lord!
‘That’s what you’re supposed to do. You have to work hard. Your talent can bring you so far. That’s his biggest challenge: changing the culture at Manchester United.’
Meanwhile, Keane went on to talk about other elements of Ten Hag’s role at United, including recruitment in which he said ‘you hope’ he’s got the ‘power’ with those above him to make the big decisions on who is coming in and out.
The Sky Sports pundit said training properly and working hard was what they should be doing
He said: ‘You mentioned there about the recruitment, you’re hoping he’s got that power with the people above him. There’s obviously been changes with the chief executive, you’ll hope that’ll be pretty straight forward.
‘But there’s definitely been issues with the previous manager in terms of getting the players they want to get in. It’s a huge part of the game.’
Keane went on to add that he does not ‘doubt’ Ten Hag’s credentials as a coach, but that you need the ‘strength in depth’ in order to compete ‘that United haven’t got’.
Keane also said that the culture at the club needed to change under Erik ten Hag this year
The Irishman went on to talk more in depth about the culture needing to change, noting the number of times Ten Hag himself had mentioned that fact in interviews.
‘He’s also mentioned in a number of interviews the culture of the club which has to change. We saw in too many games last year players not working hard enough, not running, not sprinting.
‘He has to change that mindset because United do have a lot of talented players.’
Keane said that Ten Hag needed to get a grip on the culture as one of his primary priorities
