These are the design secrets I used to style an apartment into my dream home at 26 – and the most expensive thing I purchased is $1,000

A boring three-storey apartment in Sydney has been transformed into an ‘eclectic’ space full of bold colors and playful decor.

Rowi Singh bought the three-bedroom property with her partner in mid-2020 and gave free rein to her creativity when furnishing it.

The 29-year-old content creator has an eye for design and is obsessed with bringing spaces to life by adding color, layering rugs, investing in art and focusing on unique décor.

Although Rowi is known for sharing bold makeup looks and has previously collaborated with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, she has shared her interior design secrets with FEMAIL.

Rowi, who was featured in Forbes Australia in 2022 alongside YouTuber Tammy Hembrow and comedian Christian Hull, described her style as “succinct, colorful, maximalist and eclectic.”

Rowi described her style as ‘succinct, colourful, maximalist and eclectic’. “I’ve always been interested in interior design, but I never had the chance to style a space myself until I left home,” she said

“I’ve always been interested in interior design, but I never had the chance to style a space myself until I left home,” she says.

Her epic loft-style home features a velvet green sofa, several colorful skirting boards, a bedside table with safe, numerous houseplants, quirky candles and a ‘melting’ lamp.

And the enormous 8-meter-high floor-to-ceiling windows invite natural light to illuminate the spaces on all three levels.

“I started by decorating the living room, buying the essentials first, like the couch and a rug, and then worked my way out,” she said.

“Starting with the larger pieces allows you to dictate a color palette based on what you’re drawn to.”

Rowi encouraged others to “take your time” when choosing furniture that suits them and to “not be hasty,” especially when it comes to expensive purchases.

“I usually find something I like, think about it for a few weeks or months and then revisit it to see if I still like it,” she said.

‘My creativity with my makeup and interior design are definitely connected. “I have always been a creative person and decorating feels very natural to me,” she said.

‘I like to collect things, find new places to put them and look online at how others decorate their homes.’

She laughed after admitting she probably has too many baseboards and houseplants.

While many choose to make their own furniture, Rowi said she prefers to buy second-hand items on Facebook Marketplace or in stores and has managed to score some items for free.

But in saying that, she invested in a good quality mattress and original artwork from local artists, and the most expensive thing in her apartment is a $1000 artwork.

The kitchen is quite simplistic with a ‘melting’ mirror, vase, cookbooks and diffuser

Rowi said one of the most difficult parts of decorating is visualizing whether something will look good in your home or not.

“One time I picked something up, took it home and realized I had the measurements all wrong,” Rowi said.

‘When you make a home decor purchase, make sure it is an informed choice. Don’t follow trends because you might not like it if it goes out of style.

“You have to ask yourself if you really like something, or if you just like it because you’ve been to it everywhere.”

One of the concerns with the maximalist style is the risk of veering into cluttered territory.

Rowi recommends taking a step back from your space and looking at it in a different way.

‘There is a fine line between hoarding and collecting pieces. If you choose extreme maximalism, make sure you move things around so the space doesn’t become cluttered,” she said.

She fills spaces with small side tables, disco balls, plants and beautiful vases

As for what she would never own, Rowi doesn’t like anything gaming related because it’s “not her thing” and says it “kills her vibe.”

“I’ve seen some cool setups on TikTok, but it’s just not for me. I hate seeing wires peeking everywhere and I’m not a gamer so it’s a no from me,” she said.

Exposed wires are a huge annoyance for her in the interior and to hide the wires she has changed the legs of her TV cabinet so that it is lower.
