Rotting organs stored in jars lie among the remains of a morgue left behind in France 13 years ago

The eerie remains of an abandoned morgue – including a rotting heart in a jar and empty refrigeration units – have been depicted by an explorer in France.

The old mortuary, in an undisclosed location in France, had once been a pathology school for medical students, but was abandoned after the institution closed in 2010.

Although some of the remains have been left to decay since its closure 13 years ago, some of the decomposing material had apparently been stolen.

A grim image showed a human heart rotting in a jar, improperly stored and left behind when the building was vacated.

“I’ll never forget the scent of the human heart,” said photographer and explorer Chloe Urbex, who ventured into the uninhabited building.

The site previously served as a mortuary and pathology school to educate medical students about illness and disease. The building was permanently closed due to government budget cuts.

Despite being abandoned for so long, a generator in the autopsy rooms was still plugged in and running, creating a loud noise throughout the building.

Untouched refrigerator cabinets and discarded medical equipment were also left behind.

Organs such as hearts were left in jars. But after being stored carelessly, with lids missing, they were corroded and discolored.

A heart, left in an overturned bucket, began to form and attract maggots. There was evidence that many more organs were stored in the morgue, but it appeared they had been stolen.

Until recently, the building had on-site security personnel who lived on site, but that had since left after now-aborted construction work began on the site.

Explorer and photographer Chloe Urbex captured the shocking images.

“Looking for abandoned places, I came across a morgue in France, which supposedly shook human organs, brains and bones,” she said.

“The human bones, brains and some of the broken human organs were missing,” she added.

‘Mortuary Explores has been a longtime favorite of mine, but I’ve never set foot in an abandoned building with human organs left so carelessly.

“The hearts were in open glass jars in the basement.

“Upstairs where the autopsy rooms are, loud generators are still plugged in and working, oddly enough they were quite loud and startled us a bit.

“I was relieved to get the photos because it’s an exploration I’ve wanted to see for a long time, but I’ll never forget the smell of the human heart.”
