Rory McIlroy suffers another humiliating moment at The Open as he hacks his ball just five yards in Royal Troon’s treacherous rough
Rory McIlroy looks set to have no chance at the Open Championship at Royal Troon.
After finishing seven shots over par on Thursday, McIlroy returned to the course on Friday hoping not to miss the cut.
However, things did not go as the Northern Irishman had hoped as he found himself clinging to a thin thread in the tournament.
After his ball landed on a thick patch of grass, McIlroy’s chip attempt resulted in a blooper-worthy clip. Instead of coming out of the rough, McIlroy’s swing caused the ball to bounce just a few feet in front of him – effectively leaving it in the same spot.
“Man, that was like five yards,” the announcer said after the attempt.
Rory McIlroy suffered another embarrassing moment while trying to make the cut at the Open
Before the Open Championship, McIlroy was in a deadlock for fourth place at the Scottish Open last week.
Not long before McIlroy fell on the famous eighth hole on Thursday, he lost dramatically to Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open in North Carolina.
McIlroy had the tournament at his mercy, as he was one stroke ahead of DeChambeau. However, he had a par putt of 2ft 6ins and missed. And on 18, McIlroy had another par putt of 3ft 9ins – which he also missed.
The cinematic conclusion at Pinehurst also came shortly after McIlroy shocked the golf world by filing for divorce from Erica Stoll. After declaring their marriage over and filing for divorce, McIlroy called it quits to resolve their differences for the benefit of their family.
Stoll was recently spotted on the course when McIlroy competed at the Scottish Open earlier this month. However, his glaring issues remain in the spotlight as McIlroy has not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship.
