Rory McIlroy’s wait for a green jacket continues after a miserable day ended his hopes for a Masters win.
The Northern Irishman scored a deeply disappointing 77, leaving him five over par – a whopping 17 shots behind leader Brooks Koepka.
While it has yet to be confirmed, it is inevitable that the 33-year-old will miss the cut and exit the tournament early where success continues to elude him.
McIlroy made four bogeys on a disastrous front nine to nearly end his hopes. Another bogey on 11 left him at five left and while two birdies gave hope, two bogeys in the last three saw him finish with a whimper.
The 33-year-old has won four majors but has yet to taste success at Augusta and complete the grand slam.

Despite finishing second here last year, he was never in contention this time around and will have to reflect on a poor performance. His second round score was the third worst he has shot at the Masters and has ruined any chance of success.
It’s been nine years since McIlroy won a major and the barren spell continues after what has been a slog for the world number two.
Elsewhere, LIV Gulf rebel Koepka was back in imperious form.
The outspoken 32-year-old followed Thursday’s stunning 65 with a five under par 67. Koepka was four shots away from second-seeded amateur Sam Bennett.
The 23-year-old Texan enjoys a fairytale debut and shoots a four under par 68 for the second round in a row to drop to eight under.
As of press time, Spain’s Jon Rahm is currently three shots down on the nine-under with nine holes left to play. Norway’s Viktor Hovland is six shots off the mark, also with nine holes to go.
