McIlroy and Lowry came through a playoff to win the competition at TPC Louisiana after putting it on their respective schedules in an effort to improve the FedEx Cup standings.

And after beating Chad Ramey and French Martin Trainer on the first playoff hole, the pair celebrated their victory with a few beers and a live band playing Journey’s famous 1981 hit.

Footage shared on the PGA Tour’s social media accounts shows McIlroy drinking his beer on stage in front of hundreds of fans in New Orleans as Lowry laughs next to him.

When the band Don’t Stop Believin started playing, the Northern Irishman took the microphone and delivered his best vocals for the supporters in attendance, who sang back to him.

Lowry resisted the urge to join his teammate in the singing department before they left the stage and continued celebrating their triumph.

After starting the day seven shots off the lead, Ramey and Trainer fired a 9-under 63 in Sunday’s four-round match to head to the clubhouse at 25-under 263. Other teams in the 25-under range soon faltered and fell back – including McIlroy and Lowry, for a brief time, before recovering from a bogey on No. 17 with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to advance to the playoff to enforce.

They returned to the 18th tee to begin the play-off, and Ramey’s second shot hooked left over the gallery. Trainer couldn’t hit his third shot hard enough on the green. Meanwhile, Lowry put his team in the bunker on the second shot, but McIlroy made a nice recovery shot – similar to his pitch shot on the 72nd hole to set up Lowry’s 5-foot birdie that forced the play-off.

Lowry’s birdie try in the play-off came to rest inches right of the cup, but Trainer drilled his short par putt that would have extended the play-off.

It was McIlroy’s 25th PGA Tour victory and Lowry’s third. Lowry had not won on American soil since August 2015.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” McIlroy said on CBS Sports. “We had a great week here in New Orleans. The crowds have been absolutely amazing, to get the support that we’ve had there. We had so much fun doing it and it’s just a bonus to win at the end.

“It couldn’t be better than doing this with this man next to me.”

Lowry added: “It’s great. It felt desperately needed. Coming into this week we felt like we could make a big jump for the FedEx Cup, let’s get 400 points each and that’s what we did.

“I’m a little sad to bring them because Rory carried me, but I’ll take them.”
