A young man has expressed his frustration and fear after his roommate continually endangered his life by leaving the gas stove on.
Diego* recently shared that he wants to cancel his lease and move because his roommate constantly leaves the stove on and fills their apartment with gas.
‘For over a year I have been coming home to a house that smells of gas. (My roommate) and his girlfriend don’t even smell it. “Every time he cooks, I have to go inside to check the stove and that causes me enormous stress,” he wrote on Reddit.
‘I’m even afraid to come home, for fear that I’ll walk in and smell gas again. I feel so much anger towards him.”
The housemate recently left the burner on again – and Diego shared that this was ‘the last straw’.

He sent his former friend a message informing him of the problem, but the other man didn’t seem to realize the seriousness of it.
“Hey, so I guess I feel pretty unsafe when it comes to how often the gas and burner are left on. This has been happening for over a year now. If it happens again I will have to contact the apartment to try to break the lease early. I can’t deal with this anymore,” the text read.
The roommate simply wrote back, “Okay. If it comes to that, just let us know.’
Diego provided more insight into the situation in his post.
‘Am I overreacting? I’m super angry about his complete lack of responsibility, his apathy regarding this issue, and even though he sometimes says sorry when it happens, he keeps doing it, so his ‘sorry’ means nothing to me and I don’t trust him.
‘I’ve had it and I don’t even consider him a friend anymore. Before we moved in together, we had a very good relationship. I now know that living with friends is a bad idea.
“I just feel like I can’t be friends with someone who continually shows disrespect for my life, my cat’s life, our neighbors’ lives and our apartment.”
Many criticized the roommate for his careless behavior, with one offering a workaround in the meantime.
‘Maybe try buying a gas detector/alarm. They’re piercingly loud, so I can’t see your roommate choosing to ignore it. It might help him to check if the burners are off,” someone suggested.
Others urged Diego to move as soon as possible.
“I would have ripped my roommate a new one for this. This is irresponsible and life-threatening. I would also try to get out of the lease,” one woman wrote.
‘I have experienced a house fire caused by a gas leak. Leave now before you lose everything,” another warned.
“I’m so paranoid about leaving a candle on or my curling iron plugged in when I leave the house.” I could only imagine having to worry about another adult blowing up my house or being suffocated. My stomach would be in knots,” another felt.
