A young police officer was involved in a tense confrontation with an angry car passenger who refuses to answer their questions and orders the driver to take off.
A clip posted to TikTok on Monday captured the confrontation in Sydney’s western suburbs and sparked a furious debate over who was right.
The man in a dark gray tracksuit is seen in a heated argument with two NSW police officers on the side of a suburban street.
Commentators pointed out that one of the officers had “no stripes” on his uniform, indicating he is a rookie.
A TikTok video has captured a confrontation between police and a man who refused to answer their questions in western Sydney
‘Do not touch me. Don’t touch me,’ he shouts as he runs past the police to get into the back of the car.
His uncle, sitting in the passenger seat, identifies himself to a cop and tries to hold a calm conversation while his cousin continues to yell.
“I don’t have to identify myself because I didn’t do anything,” he says.
“You’ve been doing this all my life.”
The officer claims the man kept trying to “evade them.”
“All we did is stop to talk to him and he just keeps running away, he tries to avoid us, he keeps running away from us,” the officer says.
“We just want to talk to him about what he’s doing. We can talk to people. Why is he trying to leave so quickly?’
The man in the backseat orders the driver to leave.
“Mate, you’re not driving,” the cop says.
“Turn off the engine.”

The man in the back claims the police have no reason to stop him and again orders the driver to take off.
“Drive away, drive away, they can’t, drive away man… drive away,” he says.
Reactions under the video were divided on who was right, with some saying the man should have just talked calmly to officers.
Others said he was within his rights: “If they just want to talk, you can leave without identifying yourself.”
A third person commented on how much of a novice the officer was.
“Brand new cop (no stripes) he looks out of his depth lol,” the person said.
