The Washington Commanders waste no time in ushering in a new era for the franchise, unsurprisingly firing Ron Rivera as coach while Bob Myers, the man behind the dominant Golden State Warriors NBA team, joins the organization .
The Commanders finished the season with a miserable 4-13 record, losing 38-10 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday to close out the campaign. Rivera, who turned 62 on Sunday, is leaving after four seasons.
He said after the Cowboys loss that he met with owner Josh Harris early Monday, and there he was informed of his departure in a move that marks the beginning of a major shift behind the scenes.
The Commanders are also bringing in two-time NBA Executive of the Year Myers — the man credited with orchestrating the Warriors' dominance — to lead the franchise, Ian Rapoport said Monday morning.
And Myers' arrival is one of many reasons for optimism in whoever replaces Rivera as coach.
Ron Rivera was fired as coach of the Washington Commanders on Monday
Harris' takeover of the Commanders was only completed in July and it gives him the opportunity to put his own stamp on the team with a new appointment.
Additionally, the Cowboys' loss means the Commanders will have the second pick in the Draft later this year.
They will likely go with one of the top two quarterback candidates, USC's Caleb Williams or North Carolina's Drake Maye.
Rivera's departure comes hours after the Atlanta Falcons traded away Arthur Smith.
