Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is brandishing his outsider status as he gears up for a potential presidential run with a proposal to send federal agencies out of the nation’s capital, an idea to combat “separate administrative status.”
DeSantis made the remarks from his home state on the eve of a visit to Staten Island on Monday, where he surrounds himself with law enforcement officers.
“Too much power has been built up in DC and the result is an independent administrative state that rules over us and imposes its will on us,” he said. told the New York Post on a trip to his hometown of Dunedin on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
“While there are a number of things that need to be done to reconstitutionalize government, distributing federal agencies to other parts of the country could help reduce the negative effects of this buildup of power,” said DeSantis, 44, a former three-term Chamber member.

The concept of sending federal agencies out of DC, Maryland and Virginia is not new. Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) copyright law in 2019 that would send 10 departmental headquarters out of the region.
At the time, Washington, DC had about 7 percent of federal jobs, which actually trailed California. Florida ranked sixth, at about 4 percent.
Such moves could spread federal largesse and place more federal employees in state areas with lower cost of living. But most federal workers are already out of Washington, and efforts to remove bureaucratic decision-makers haven’t always worked.
Under the Trump administration, the headquarters of the Department of the Interior moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. But the Biden administration recaptured the headquarters in 2021, just a year after the move was completed.
There have been many other efforts to move the federal agency’s headquarters out of DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

DeSantis is making other moves for a potential career, with former President Donald Trump regularly calling him ‘Ron DeSantimonious’ and signs of impatience among Senate Republicans who hope he can clear some of the field.
His memoir, “The Courage to Be Free,” is due for release on February 28, and some predict he might do something after Florida’s legislative session concludes in May.

DeSantis mentioned the book and the session when asked about others who jumped into the running.
