Romelu Lukaku endured a torrid first half of Belgium’s opening Euro 2024 match against Slovakia after squandering three big chances in front of goal.
Belgium trailed 1-0 at the break after Jeremy Doku’s mistake gave the opponent an easy opening goal in the 7th minute, but Lukaku had chances to get his side back on level terms.
The 31-year-old is a typically reliable goalscorer for Belgium when he features in the major competitions, but was criticized for his waste three times in the opening 45 minutes.
Lukaku’s first golden opportunity saw him reject a chance from six yards just two minutes into the encounter as the ball rolled towards him in the penalty area.
His next shooting opportunity came moments later when he came one-on-one with an oncoming goalkeeper, but was unable to make the most of it.

Another mistake just before half-time saw the Chelsea striker attempt a pass when he was on target, but instead of shooting he was left red-faced as his touch put the ball out of play.
Lukaku later thought he had been given a reprieve early in the second half as Belgium hunted for an equalizer, but much to his annoyance his goal was disallowed for offside.
The former Man United and Inter Milan star was tasked with leading Belgium’s attack in his side’s opening European Championship match at the Frankfurt Arena.
He was flanked by Doku and Arsenal star Leandro Trossard, with Kevin de Bruyne providing play support just behind in the number 10 position.
