Rodrigo Bentancur reason for sudden collapse is confirmed, as Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou issues positive update on his condition
The reason for Rodrigo Bentancur’s sudden collapse on the pitch on Wednesday evening has been confirmed.
The Uruguayan midfielder was substituted in the first half of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg tie with Liverpool after a lengthy layoff during which the player received treatment on the pitch.
Bentancur fell to the ground in the first half without anyone around him, causing major concerns about his health.
The Uruguayan was then taken to hospital for a thorough medical examination before returning home on Wednesday evening.
However, an update has emerged from Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, with the Australian manager revealing Bentancur had suffered ‘a concussion’.

Bentancur’s on-field collapse has resulted in concussion, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed
‘Luckily good news. He was at the hospital and they did all the tests, just checking that everything was fine, and everything was fine. He’s back home and he’s doing well, he’s feeling good.’
“We’re following the protocols now and it’s a few weeks where you just have to check that everything is OK, but luckily it looks like a concussion but nothing more.
‘It’s always annoying. You especially saw Pedro (Porro), who was there first and knew it was a dire situation, but I thought the boys dealt with it well and the medical team dealt with it well, and luckily all well.”
The 27-year-old needed treatment on the pitch for nine minutes after his fall before being carried off to applause from both groups of supporters.
However, the player himself was quick to dispel any concerns about his health on social media shortly after the match.
He took to social media to share an update on his condition with his fiancée, writing, “All good guys! Thanks for the messages!!! Congratulations on the win guys!!!’
He could now be on the sidelines again after missing eight games this season due to suspension.
Bentancur was handed a seven-match ban for making racist comments against Tottenham captain Son Heung-min during a TV interview in Uruguay.
He posted a positive update on Instagram as he posed for a photo with fiancée Melany La Banca, but he won’t return to training until he gets the green light from doctors.
The Tottenham star received nine minutes of medical attention before being taken away
He then sat out Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday after picking up his fifth booking of the season last week.
With their teammate undergoing medical checks, Spurs won the first leg in North London 1–0, with Lucas Bergvall striking in the 96th minute to stun the Reds, handing them just a second defeat of the season in all competitions.
Tottenham are back in action on Sunday when they take on National League side Tamworth in the FA Cup.
They then travel through North London to take on Arsenal in a mouth-watering Premier League match next Wednesday.
