Rock of Gibraltar, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sue Magnier’s horse that eventually became the center of an all-powerful feud, has died aged 23.

Coolmore Stud announced the passing of the champion racehorse and highly regarded sire on Monday.

The horse, which won seven Group 1 winners in a stellar career, became the subject of a major legal dispute between Ferguson and John Magnier after the Manchester United manager believed he owed some of the horse’s stud fee.

Upon his retirement in 2003, with the horse worth up to £200 million by some estimates due to expensive fees for his stud, Ferguson attempted legal action against Magnier, who he said denied what he owed.

More to come.
