Susan, who met her future husband on the set of 2003’s Gothika, is credited with helping the Chaplin star turn his life around after multiple rehabilitation treatments and even prison failed.

The devoted wife refused to take credit during a December interview with the hollywood reporter after a special screening of the Netflix documentary Sr., which focused on the life and career of actor Chef’s father, Robert Downey, Sr.

“If anyone has ever dealt with someone with an addiction, they know it has nothing to do with someone else,” he told the audience.

They have to be ready. If you can be a small part of creating an alternate world for them that says, ‘Hey, I’m here. If you’re clean, great. But there’s no credit that gets me beyond basically saying, “This is what I need to have happen,” or, more importantly, “What can’t be happening.” But he is completely that person.

Robert recalled that moment of truth as “the clearest conversation I’ve ever had in my entire life.” You know when someone is being so clear with you about something and you say ‘there’s no wiggle room right now… but ultimatums work!’

Susan clarified and said, “But they only work if the person is ready.”

The actor, who seemed eager to get away from the seriousness of the conversation, replied in a high-pitched voice, “You set me up.”
