‘His life story is of course an amazing and inspiring rollercoaster. I’ve been there from the beginning. And this will be a highlight for someone who truly deserves it,” Lowe said.

Downey Jr.’s troubled childhood, riddled with addiction, was even part of Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue.

“This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr.’s long and illustrious career… one of the highest points,” referring to his drug use in his teenage years.

Downey Jr. still managed to smile at the camera, pointing to his nose, indicating the joke was too ‘on the nose’, although Kimmel continued with the bit.

“Was that also on the nose or a medicine motion you made?” Kimmel asked as Downey Jr. motioned him to continue.

Kimmel added, β€œBut look at him, he’s so handsome, so talented, he’s won every award there is to win. Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?’ while Downey Jr. just shrugged.

Just minutes later, last year’s Best Supporting Actor winner – Ke Huy Quan – announced that Downey had won as he took the stage.

“I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order,” he said, before thanking his “vet”/wife Susan Downey.

β€œShe found me a growling rescue pet and you loved me back to life, that’s why I’m here,” Downey Jr. said. against his wife and production partner.

He added that his “little secret” was that he had to play Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer more than the production needed him to.

β€œEmma (Thomas) made sure to surround me with one of the best cast and crew of all time, Emily (Blunt), Cillian (Murphy), Matt Damon, it was fantastic,” he said.

‘I am a better person as a result. You know that what we do is meaningful and the things we decide to make are important,” he added before thanking his team.
