Rivals stars team up with British fashion house Burberry for sweet London themed Christmas advert

Rivals stars David Tennant and Alex Hassell teamed up with British fashion house Burberry on Wednesday for a striking London-themed Christmas advert.

The actors, who play Lord Tony Baddingham (Tennant) and Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) in the new Disney series, cut dapper figures as they chatted along the street.

Doctor Who star David, 53, turned heads in a smart £3,580 pinstripe double-breasted suit and tie, which he wore with a navy blue jacket and £420 red scarf from the designer.

Meanwhile, Alex, 44, was seen wearing a similar suit under a £1,690 coat as he carried a number of perfectly wrapped presents in Burberry red paper stacked on top of each other.

The pair were seen walking laden with gifts before Alex leaned against a lamppost while David hailed an iconic black London cab.

Alex and David were all smiles as they got into the taxi before driving away, as festive music played over the clip.

Burberry shared the advert on Instagram, writing: ‘Co-stars and friends David Tennant and Alex Hassell embrace the spirit of the season in heritage rainwear and iconic Burberry accessories #WrappedInBurberry’

Since Rivals dropped on Disney+ last month, fans have said they are “obsessed” with the show.

The highly anticipated series, which is being hailed as a ‘bonkbuster’, scores an average of 93% on the Tomatometer, based on rave reviews from fourteen critics.

In addition to David and Alex, the star-studded cast includes Aidan Turner, Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, Oliver Chris and Claire Rushbrook.

Set in 1986, the story follows the cutthroat world of television, including the tense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (Tennant).

Steamy issues and desires are explored over a series of parties and lunches in Lord Baddingham’s countryside.

It comes after Alex revealed he did indeed go completely naked for saucy scenes as Lothario Campbell-Black in the eye-popping series.

The actor confessed to baring his actual penis during the infamous tennis scene with busty co-star Emily Atack, 34, after shunning the option of using a prosthesis or digital simulation and instead of being nervous, brazenly admitted: ‘I am not without attributes.’

He told it Times 2 magazine: ‘I don’t mind seeing my butt and penis on screen, I wouldn’t have done this job if I was particularly shy about my body.’

The character’s erotic efforts see him join the mile high club on Concorde just seconds into the first episode, before stripping off to make love on a fur rug.

He told it Subway: ‘It was discussed how comfortable I was, whether or not it would be me or prosthetics or digital. But in the end we just went for it.’

Speaking about the logistics of filming the raunchy scenes, he said: “You plan all this stuff in advance and on the day you just try not to giggle too much.”

Rivals – what do the critics say?

The Ny Breaking

Judgement:

‘Dame Jilly’s million-selling Rutshire Chronicles starts with so much sex and swearing and nudity and ridiculously brilliant, tongue-in-cheek fun that it almost feels as if, instead of chopping away at Jilly’s joy, executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins and his brilliant team of writers have added more added.’

The times

Judgement:

‘How much you enjoy Rivals depends on how much of a Jilly Cooper fan you are (I think she’s fantastic). But even if you’re not up to date with the books, you can enjoy a lush series that takes you back a decade (it’s set in 1986) before cell phones and when people still got drunk at lunch.

‘This is a big pink Anglo bubblegum of a production and a touch of retro escapism. God knows we all need a little bit of that right now.”

Digital spy

Judgement:

‘When the show doesn’t stray too far from sex, money and chicanes, it’s soapy fun, albeit with an astonishing cliffhanger that might leave you foaming at the mouth because we don’t know if Disney will sink another huge budget for more.

‘You’ll blush. You’ll cackle. You’ll be gasping for breath.’

The Telegraph

Judgement:

‘Sex, class and the eighties in one rollicking OTT package, and we haven’t even gotten to nude tennis yet. Relax and enjoy.’

‘There are eight episodes. It sags a bit towards the end, when the script is more concerned with the business of regional television franchises than with love, lust and shirtless hunks. But overall it’s a wonderful antidote to modern life.’

The Evening Standard

Judgement:

“This tumescent adaptation of Disney+’s ’80s bonkbuster is packed with pneumatic talent and opens with a statement of intent.”

‘Is Rivals good TV? God, no. It’s brash, obvious, cartoonish. It’s great entertainment. Phwoar, yes.’
