Rita Wilson arrives at The View in NYC to promote A Man Called Otto, her new film with Tom Hanks

Rita Wilson was a guest at The View on Monday in New York City to promote her movie A Man Called Otto.

The 66-year-old actress was a producer on the film, which starred her husband, two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks.

During her session, the Hollywood veteran described the film as “life-affirming.”

When asked if those themes drew her to the project, Rita said: “As human beings, as citizens of the world, I believe we have more in common than what separates us. And if you really break it down, we really want to be able to take care of each other.

“I know we have differences, we all do, but I don’t think that takes away from kindness to one another, and ultimately it’s a life-affirming film.”

She also said that she asked Tom why he doesn’t do more comedies and he told her that he hadn’t come up with anything that had “depth”.

Hanks made a name for himself in Hollywood as a lovable drama actor, but he got his start in comedy doing projects like Bosom Buddies, Bachelor Party, Big, and Turner & Hooch.

Rita then talked about how Tom ended up playing a role so different from his usual type.

She said: “I remember having a lot of conversations with him like, ‘Why aren’t you doing more comedies?’ and he says, “There really hasn’t been anything that has come up that has the kind of depth, that has the meaning, that has something that is about something else…”

Tom starred in the title role and was joined by Mariana Treviño, Manuel García-Rulfo and Rachel Keller.

The film was an adaptation of a successful Swedish book and film titled A Man Called Ove, which was released in 2015 and starred Rolf Lassgard in the title role.

The most recent version had various themes such as multiculturalism, discrimination, economic inequality, and the housing crisis.

The Songbird singer also wrote and performed the theme song for the movie called Til You’re Home.

He shared that he co-wrote the song with David Hodges, who wrote Because of You with Kelly Clarkson, and that a conversation with the late Mike Nichols, who directed The Graduate, inspired the song.

He said: “When my father died, Rita, the conversation continues.” And at the time, I was grieving, and you don’t really know what that means, and a few months later, you start to realize, oh, I’m having a conversation with my dad, and he’s talking back to me. I can hear it.

The song Rita wrote for the film is on the shortlist for the 2023 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
