Top game developer Riot Games suffered a cyber attack that forced it to delay the release of new content, it has confirmed.
In a short Twitter thread (opens in new tab) leaving many questions unanswered, the company confirmed that an unknown threat actor used social engineering to attack Riot Games employees and gain access to systems in the company’s development environment.
As a result, the company had to postpone game patches for several games, including the globally popular multiplayer online battle arena – League of Legends (LoL).
Small setback
Fortunately, customers’ personal information is safe, the company believes.
“We don’t have all the answers at this time, but we wanted to communicate early and let you know that there is no indication that any player data or personal information has been obtained,” the thread reads.
“Unfortunately, this has temporarily impacted our ability to release content. While our teams work hard on a fix, we expect it to impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games.”
Individual gaming departments have also confirmed the breach, BleepingComputer found. LoL’s team confirmed the delay in patching, but assured players that wherever the release was planned will be released eventually.
“This may affect our delivery date for Patch 13.2. The League team is working to push the boundaries of what we can hotfix to still deliver the majority of planned and tested balance changes on time,” the developers said. . “Other things, like the Ahri ASU, may need to be moved to patch 13.3 (Feb 8), but we’ll keep you posted as we work on this.”
The developers working on Teamfight Tactics (TFT), another Riot Games product, said players could expect a hotfix: “This issue may affect our ability to release the full scope of planned balance changes, but we are working to deploy the most meaningful of those possible via a hotfix at our scheduled patch time.”.
