Rio Ferdinand has claimed AC Milan’s two Champions League games against Chelsea last week ‘could not have turned out worse’ for Fikayo Tomori.
Tomori endured a difficult game at Stamford Bridge last week as Milan slid to a 3-0 defeat, and he was then sent off in the first half after dragging Mason Mount back into the penalty area in Tuesday’s return leg, which saw the Blues won. 2-0.
The 24-year-old has picked up just three caps for England, despite some supporters calling for him to be deployed more regularly. Ferdinand thinks Southgate will feel justified after Tomori’s two outings against his former club.
Fikayo Tomori was sent to AC Milan after withdrawing Mason Mount from Chelsea on Tuesday
He pleaded his innocence but got his marching orders in the first half in San Siro
“In the last two games he has probably shown two elements of his game with Gareth Southgate thinking ‘I had no right to choose him,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport after Tuesday’s game.
“Lossed concentration before the penalty, which allowed Mason Mount to get behind him, and in the first game, his posture and the way he tried to clear the Aubameyang goal.
“Two big games, showpieces for him to really set a marker and stake his claim to a place in the England team. But in that sense, these two games couldn’t have ended worse for him.
Tomori was called up last month to the 28-man England squad for the final internationals against Italy and Germany.
Rio Ferdinand thinks Tomori showed why Gareth Southgate was reluctant to play him for England
However, he was dropped from the match roster when the Three Lions face Germany at Wembley, indicating that he is currently alone on the sidelines of the team.
With the World Cup just over a month away, he seems to be sweating in his seat on the plane to Qatar.
Ferdinand would like to see Tomori given the chance to show what he can do, but has admitted Southgate may have even more doubts about the centre-back after his last two appearances in Europe.
“He’s young and he’ll be back. I still think he’s worth the chance to prove himself in an England shirt,” Ferdinand continued.
“But these matches will certainly have disappointed him in Gareth’s eyes, I’m sure of that.”
