The hitmaker was announced to perform Lift Me Up at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards last month.

The singer’s hit song debuted in October last year and marked the first time she had released solo material in six years.

The song served as the lead single from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack album and acted as a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Lift Me Up met with a mixed critical reception from critics, though it was a huge hit with listeners, peaking at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Songwriter Tems discussed working on the track in a press release and expressed via Fashion that he was happy to have been able to collaborate with Rihanna.

“Rihanna has been an inspiration to me, so to hear her broadcast this song is a great honor,” he said.

The musician went on to elaborate on the themes of the song and what he tried to achieve with the project.

“I wanted to write something that portrayed a warm hug from all the people I have lost in my life. I tried to imagine how I would feel if I could sing to them now and express to them how much I miss them,” she said.

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who also worked on the song, also issued a statement where he expressed through CBS News that the project’s creative team sought to create a fitting tribute to Boseman, who passed away at the age of 43 in 2020.

“It was an honor to work with these amazing musicians on creating a song for our movie and for our friend,” he said.

Lift Me Up was announced to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song last January.

Other artists who have applied for the distinction include Lady Gaga and David Byrne.
