Ricky Pearsall doing ‘remarkably well’ after being shot on Saturday, says 49ers coach John Lynch: ‘Nothing short of miraculous’

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch says wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is doing “remarkably well” after being shot during an attempted robbery over the weekend.

Pearsall was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest after a 17-year-old forward tried to steal the wideout’s Rolex.

Lynch said Pearsall, who is on the injured list outside of football and will miss the first four games of the season, has exceeded expectations and is focused on returning to the field.

“I think one of his first concerns is when he can play,” Lynch said Tuesday. “He asks me [in the hospital]…I don’t know, but the surgeon was there and helped him with these kinds of thoughts.’

Lynch seemed confident the wide receiver could help the Niners at some point this season, but he’s being cautious in the meantime.

“He’s doing remarkably well,” Lynch said. “It’s kind of uncharted territory. It’s not every day you get to deal with something like that … It was just a lot for him to process.

Our medical experts found [it was] too much to ask to come back within the next four weeks. We made that decision to at least give him that time. [It’s] ‘Truly, truly amazing.’

Lynch added: ‘Ultimately we felt the most important thing we had to worry about was Ricky’s well-being, physically, emotionally and mentally.

“He’s going to need that time physically. He’s going to need that time emotionally, mentally … When we drafted Ricky, we did it for the long haul and Ricky’s going to be a fantastic player here.

“He’s excited, he was disappointed but he understood that we put him on that list. And what that means, it’s at least four weeks, and we’re just going to take it as it comes.”

Pearsall will not only recover from the shooting, but will also have time to recover from a shoulder injury that he has been struggling with for some time.

According to ESPN, Pearsall will “stay with the team, attend meetings and reengage” whenever the Niners need him.

“Several people down there said this was the best outcome you could get in this situation,” Lynch said.

‘Ricky prides himself on being available and he keeps stressing, ‘I promise you, I’m not injury prone.’ This is not being injury prone… He’s going to be a fantastic player.

“Whenever we’ve seen him in a play, he’s been everything we’ve ever imagined and more. We can’t wait for that to become a reality in the future.”

“But first and foremost, we’re making sure he’s completely healthy and ready to go.”

Pearsall is busy making his return to the team, reportedly showing up in the Niners’ weight room after the shooting.

“I talked to him yesterday, he was actually in the weight room,” said KNBR’s Tim Ryan. “Luckily it’s not worse than it was. … I know that already, his street cred has gone up a lot here.”

Pearsall was released from the hospital Sunday — 24 hours after he was shot in downtown San Francisco. He was initially listed as being in “serious but stable condition.”

The incident reportedly took place in the city’s Union Square. It is believed the football player was attacked more for his Rolex than his NFL status.

Police immediately arrested the 17-year-old suspect, who was not wearing shoes after losing them at the scene of the attack. They remained in custody as of Monday evening and could face charges this week.

Authorities said the attempted robbery failed when the suspect was shot by his own gun during a struggle with Pearsall, who refused to surrender.
