Richard Wilkins has hit out at critics who branded his son Christian a “fake baby” after the budding actor topped the list of Australia’s most privileged offspring.
The term ‘nepo baby’ refers to a person who takes advantage of their family ties or privileged background.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Richard said the label irritated him because his son should not be criticized for having parents who are just trying to support their child.
“I get a little irritated when you look at any law firm or panel beaters and they all embrace their families, give their children jobs and help them with their lives,” he said.
‘Why wouldn’t you? That’s what being a parent is: helping your child. Yes, you may be able to open a door, but it has to go through.”

Meanwhile, Christian, who recently moved to the US to pursue an acting career, laughed off the label.
He said his famous family name has made no difference to his success abroad.
“I’m very grateful to be my father’s son and if that’s what a nepo baby is, then whatever,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
‘And I can tell you so much. Unfortunately, the Wilkins name doesn’t carry that much weight in Los Angeles, so I don’t necessarily feel like a nepo baby there.”

Christian has even made waves in Hollywood on his own.
‘It is awesome. I love living there. I’ve already filmed a few short films this year. I have just been cast in an online TV series where I am playing the lead,” he revealed.
‘It’s very exciting. I’m very grateful that I can come back here and have a safe landing spot and a place so beautiful that I can call it home.
“I’ve always been a big believer in chasing the fear and it’s definitely scary, but so far it’s paying off and I’m loving it.”
Richard added: “Last year his timing wasn’t ideal. He moved there a week before the writers’ strike so there wasn’t much going on, but this year he’s back and business is good, it’s great.’

“Honestly, it doesn’t bother me at all,” he said.
‘People will say what they want to say. And there are many more people who say nice things than negative things.
‘I have always believed that if you have the opportunity to create visibility for minorities, you should take that opportunity. And I think any potential positives that I do far outweigh the negatives.”

The father-son duo have collaborated on their new podcast, The apple and the tree.
Christian came up with the idea of working with his father, hoping to combine their professional skills and family bond.
‘It was an idea I had. In short, I love working with Dad, and he is such an incredible professional. He is so passionate about what he gets to do in it,” he said.

“I’ve always enjoyed watching him and absorbing everything he knows through osmosis and thinking, wouldn’t it be great if we worked together and spent some time together and shared what we both know, and we have achieved this result that we are both very proud of.’
Meanwhile, Richard reflected on the journey of bringing the podcast to life.
‘It took about two years to get to this point. We stop, go, stop, go and Christian moved to the US, but it’s a really nice feeling to see those crazy photos we had taken come to life and the podcast being produced and put together.
We are happy, proud and excited.”
