An autopsy report found that fitness guru Richard Simmons had traces of prescription insomnia medications in his system at the time of his death.
The report released Thursday by the Los Angeles County coroner found that Simmons, 76, had diphenhydramine, trazodone and zolpidem in his system.
According to the toxicology report, there was no evidence of drug use in his system.
According to the autopsy report obtained by DailyMail.com, the same pills were found in his bathroom.
The coroner ruled his cause of death as “blunt force trauma” caused by a “fall to the ground.” The cause of death was ruled an accident.
An autopsy report released Thursday found prescription drugs used to treat insomnia in Richard Simmons’ system.
The report also revealed that Simmons suffered from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
On August 13, he was found in his home by his regular housekeeper, just one day after celebrating his 76th birthday.
The autopsy report also revealed that Simmons had a “palpable fracture” to his left femur and bruises and abrasions on his right forehead, posterior scalp, arms and other parts of his body.
Simmons’ brother, Lenny, announced last week that the death had been ruled an “accident” due to complications from recent falls and heart conditions.
“The toxicology report was negative, except for the medication Richard was prescribed,” family spokesman Tom Estey told People. “The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.
According to the report, Simmons fell on the evening of August 12, but decided not to immediately seek medical attention because he wanted to spend “his birthday” – which was the next day – at home.
Instead, his caregiver helped Simmons back into bed.
“The deceased reportedly experienced dizziness after using the restroom and fell to the floor,” wrote an investigator with the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
‘It is not known whether the deceased hit his head.’
His secretary, who visited the fitness guru, told officials that Simmons’ “speech was slurred.” His caregiver told officials that Simmons did take medication before going to sleep.
“The toxicology report was negative, except for the medication Richard was prescribed,” a family spokesperson told People. “The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”
Simmons’ body is removed from his West Hollywood home following his death on July 13, 2024
The next day at approximately 9:30 a.m., his caregiver found Simmons unconscious on his bedroom floor.
Simmons announced in March that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer.
He took to Facebook to celebrate his birthday the day before, writing to fans: ‘Thank you… I’ve never had so many birthday messages in my life! I’m sitting here writing emails. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard.’
Simmons also revealed his fun plans for celebrating his birthday in a rare interview, telling People that he’s going to put his birthday candle in a zucchini because he’s a “vegetarian.”
Reflecting on his 76th birthday, he added: “I feel good! I’m grateful to be here, to be alive another day. I’m going to spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is helping people.”
