Richard Madeley reveals he needed tongue surgery as he returns to Good Morning Britain

Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley reveals he required TONGUE surgery after ‘freak accident’ at home as he returns to the show after a two-week absence.

Richard Madeley caused Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid to drop her jaws on Monday after revealing that emergency tongue surgery was the reason for her two-week absence.

The presenter has returned to the ITV breakfast show after a ten-day layoff, during which former Labor politician Ed Balls took his place alongside veteran Reid, 52.

Detailing the cause of her absence, Madeley, 66, admitted she needed an operation after breaking her chin on a car door while “fiddling” around her home.

“I was a freak having an accident or I had a freak accident, take your pick,” he explained.

“I was crouching down on an incline between my open car door and I was playing with something on the underside of the car and I turned around just as the door decided to close on its own, gravity closed it.”

He added: “It’s a big, heavy door and it hit me on the chin and I really bit my tongue, to the extent that I needed an operation, I had to have some stitches.”

The admission left Reid, who announced the return of his regular co-host via social media on Sunday, with his head in his hands.

Reid recently admitted that a lot happens behind the scenes before viewers see her appear on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on weekdays from 6am.

The presenter has offered a summary of what a normal day is like for her during an interview with sunday times magazine, which begins with a 3:40 am wake-up call from your alarm clock.

Reid revealed that she takes five minutes in bed to review her emails and the day’s headlines before getting up to start her day.

The mother-of-three said the start of her day is quite rushed, as she throws on a coat over her pajamas and brushes her teeth before getting into the car dispatched by ITV to take her to the studio.

Time in the car is put to great use, catching up on newspapers and interviewee reports due on the show that day.

Reid also takes the time to review the stories that the investigators and producers have been putting together overnight.

He explained that the most important document he reviews on the trip is what is known as the Grid, which provides key times and points for the show.

The presenter admitted that it’s “a lot” to take in during the 25-minute drive from her home to the studio at the London Television Center in west London.

Confessing that she loves her early hours, she added: ‘My three children divide their time between me and my ex.

‘The brilliant thing about my job is that a lot of my workday is when they are still sleeping and I’m home when they get back from school or work.’
