‘I probably sleep a little better in bed with Judy, but I can do just fine on my own too.’
On the possibility of disrupting Judy’s sleep with the early awakening, he added: ‘I wouldn’t dream of doing that to Judy.
“Aside from anything else, you can’t mess with Judy and her sleep.”
Richard and Judy recently reflected on their relationship their Channel 5 documentaryOur Best Bits – In Our Own Words, broadcast in the summer.
The pair spoke about the first time they met in Granada and the initial chemistry between them.
Judy was married to journalist David Henshaw at the time and Richard was in the middle of a divorce from his first wife Lynda.
Judy said: “I remember on your first day you walked into the newsroom, you were wearing a ridiculous sky blue suit… you just looked like a pr**.
“I was appointed as your babysitter, in Grenada they had a system whereby the newcomer was assigned a father or mother to literally show him the ropes, and I was your mother.”

Reminiscing, Richard said: ‘I suddenly felt two hands on my neck and I heard a voice say, ‘I’m your mother’ and I turned around and it was this beautiful blonde.
“It seemed like an odd thing to say, so I was like, ‘What?’” So yeah, she was my assigned mother.”
Opening up about their first kiss, the pair revealed it was after a day’s work in Blackpool in the back of a black cab.
‘We were filming in Blackpool, we spent a really long day filming promos, we really hit it off. We ended up getting a black taxi, as the crew were away we headed back to Manchester which was a good hour away.
‘It was in the darkness of the taxi that we really fell for each other and kissed.’

And in a new interview, daughter Chloe, 37 – who recently split from husband James Haskell – opened up about how her parents coped with their four-decade relationship as she revealed the secret of their long-term union.
When asked how her parents had maintained such a long-lasting marriage, she explained Poet magazine: ‘They would honestly say the same thing: that the secret to such a long marriage is that they don’t get divorced.
‘They have been together for over 40 years and during that time there have been times when things have been really tough for them, but they kept going and stayed together. I don’t think it was ever bad enough that they broke up.’
The personal trainer then praised the pair for setting a “pretty gold standard,” before noting that she had “hit the jackpot” when it came to parents.
Despite their successful union, Chloe admitted that she never felt any “pressure” from her parents to go through with her own marriage.
