Skin cancer develops mainly on sun-exposed areas of the skin, including the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms and hands, and on the legs in women.

But it can also form in areas that rarely see daylight: the palms of the hands, under the fingernails or toenails, and the genital area.

Skin cancer affects people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions.

When melanoma occurs in people with darker skin tones, it is more likely to occur in areas that are not normally exposed to the sun, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

What are the signs of skin cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: melanoma (including nodular melanoma), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

Melanoma: The deadliest form of skin cancer and, if left untreated, can spread to other parts of the body. It appears as a new stain or an existing stain that changes in color, size, or shape.

Basal cell carcinoma: Most common and least dangerous form of skin cancer. Red, pale, or pearly in color, it appears as a lump or a dry, scaly area. It grows slowly, usually in areas that are often exposed to the sun.

Squamous cell carcinoma: A thickened, red, scaly patch that can bleed easily, crust over, or ulcerate. It grows for a few months, usually in areas exposed to the sun. It is more likely to occur in people over the age of 50.

For years, doctors had struggled to help the model, but after she decided to try different therapies, including shock therapy and hypnotherapy, she said that recently she finally began to learn to cope better.

Rhian explained: “For the last five years I have been diagnosed with anxiety. But I’ve had it since I was about three or four years old and it wasn’t really a thing back then.

‘Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a bad time. I feel like he has taken over a lot of my life, but he comes from a phobia of being sick.

‘I have ideas where it came from because I’ve had so many different types of therapy over the years. I have had hypnotherapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), shock therapy.

And they pushed me back in a way, something I never thought was possible. I thought this was just ridiculous talk, but they managed to bring up memories I didn’t know I had. That was the hypnotherapy that did that.

Rhian explained that hypnotherapy helped bring up memories of her childhood, including seeing a diner lady at her school sick, helping her understand when the phobia started.
