Revolutionary cooling system helps Micron unleash an SSD solution that achieves a whopping 45 GBps – Airjet once again delivers a convincing tour de force to keep four PCI 5.0 SSDs running

Micron has presented a new concept product that combines four 2TB Crucial T700 SSDs in a RAID array on an add-in card (AIC) to achieve a staggering speed of 45 Gbps – all cooled by Airjet’s new cooling system.

The Crucial T700, one of the fastest SSDs in the world, uses the Phison P5026-E26 controller in an eight-channel design, designed for some of the fastest computers and heavy-duty applications.

But as with all PCIe 5.0 SSDs, you can only achieve the highest speeds by cooling it sufficiently. PCIe 5.0 SSDs generate a huge amount of heat during use, which negatively affects performance. Therefore, heat sinks are normally recommended. Merging four devices together would therefore require significant cooling effort to maintain performance for extended periods of time.

Next generation cooling

But Micron’s 8TB compilation – which can achieve sequential read and write speeds of 45 Gbps and 42 Gbps respectively – can work by using Frore Systems’ AirJet Mini cooling technology, according to Tom’s hardware.

San Jose-based Frore Systems has spent the past 12 months designing a new cooling chip that is being built into more and more hardware components. These AirJet chips forgo fans and instead provide airflow by vibrating a thin membrane within the chip at ultrasonic frequencies, which generate jets of air that cool the system.

Over the course of last year, Frore’s cooling system was spotted in several machines, including the Zotac ZBox PI430AJ mini pc. Reviews of the device show that two AirJet coolers keep the CPU in it below 70 degrees Celsius.

Frore also demonstrated his potential as fits a 15-inch MacBook Air, with the custom version outperforming the factory-ready version in every department. The longer the laptop ran, the greater the performance differences became.

Micron’s 8TB SSD merge is based on a custom Gigabyte Aorus Gen5 AIC adapter that can support up to four PCIe 5.0 SSDs – paving the way for data transfer speeds of up to 60Gbps. This is cooled with four AirJet Mini modules, one for each SSD, which rest on a copper heat spreader mounted on the SSDs.
