Revealed: WWE’s huge opponent for John Cena’s last-ever WrestleMania match during retirement tour

  • The wrestling icon is set to meet Cody Rhodes in Las Vegas in April
  • Another world title would put him above Ric Flair as the outright record holder
  • Meanwhile, Roman Reigns and CM Punk are rumored to be teaming up at an event

John Cena enters the final WrestleMania of his in-ring career and WWE sends him off in the biggest way possible.

While very few WWE legends remain retired after ending their careers, the 47-year-old is spending more time in Hollywood and WWE has announced that this is his final run.

WrestleMania 41 will take place in Las Vegas in April and WWE has decided to give Cena one of the top spots on the card.

According to the Wrestling Observer NewsletterCena will challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Heavyweight Title.

Cena, a record-breaking 16-time world champion in WWE, would get the chance to surpass Ric Flair and set the record for most world titles at the age of 17.

Rhodes will have been back in WWE for three years by the time he makes his entrance in Las Vegas, having ascended to the top babyface position that Cena has dominated for more than a decade.

Elsewhere, Roman Reigns and CM Punk are rumored to be teaming up, but reports also suggest that The Rock is expected to work his second consecutive WrestleMania and if Rhodes faces Cena, it seems the obvious choice would be to face his real-life cousin Reigns.

As for the other world title, it’s rumored that Gunther will defend his title against Seth Rollins, the man who will face CM Punk when WWE debuts on Netflix with RAW on January 6.

Cena is one of wrestling’s most iconic faces. She joined WWE in 2001 and appeared in the company’s biggest events before performing on a more part-time basis starting in 2018.

He won his first world championship in 2005 before changing his face to a more heroic character. He is also a five-time WWE United States Champion and has twice achieved Royal Rumble glory, first coming out on top during his 2008 peak.

Five years later, he won the title again to set up a crunch match with rival The Rock, which he won to secure his 11th WWE Championship title.

He’ll retire next year after years of dazzling giant crowds with his signature moves.

Despite this year’s antics and still being part of the company, it appears that The Rock himself will not be participating in next year’s event, reported Dr. Sportskeeda’s Chris Featherstone last month.

“I have been informed that these plans are “subject to change at any time,” and WWE is certainly interested in using him if he becomes available, but he is not currently scheduled to compete.”

Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, meanwhile, posted: “I’m seeing a number of people posting The Rock’s Instagram comments from months ago in his replies. He is the Rock and ultimately he can do whatever he wants, but this message is true and has been true for some time.”

Johnson had taken to Instagram in October with bogus claims that he had missed out on WrestleMania in 2025, posting: “Don’t believe any of that nonsense.”

Rhodes, meanwhile, won the Royal Rumble for the second year in a row earlier this year, defeating the favored Punk in the dying embers in a drama-packed match.

The 39-year-old managed to shock the world and meet Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania, which he won in April.
