REVEALED: Why Lionel Messi won FIFA’s The Best men’s player award despite finishing LEVEL in voting with Erling Haaland… with Liverpool trio and Harry Kane picking Argentine over Man City star

Lionel Messi was crowned winner of the FIFA Best Men’s award despite finishing level in the voting with Manchester City star Erling Haaland.

Messi was confirmed as winner of the award for a third time, with the Argentine legend edging out Haaland despite the Norwegian’s role in Man City’s Treble last season.

Both Messi and Haaland scored 48 points after the votes were counted, while Kylian Mbappe finished third with 35 points.

Messi was ultimately declared the winner after receiving the most first-choice nominations from national team captains.

The votes of the national team captains, coaches, media and fans were collected, resulting in a tie for first place.

The winner was determined based on the highest number of ‘five-point’ scores from votes cast by the men’s national captains under the rules of the award.

Messi scored a total of 107 five-point scores to lift the award, while Haaland received 64.

One of the captaincy votes Haaland received was from Messi, with the Argentine star putting the Norwegian in first place.

France captain Mbappe chose his former PSG teammate Messi as his first choice.

England captain Harry Kane was among those who voted for Messi over Haaland, with the duo being his top two choices, with Bernardo Silva third.
