It’s fair to say Neymar endured a torturous 2024 on the pitch, but according to reports he still received a staggering pay package from his club Al-Hilal.
Recovering from a serious knee injury, Brazilian top scorer Neymar struggled with his fitness and made just two appearances for the Saudi Pro League side before the end of the year.
In total, those two appearances yielded just 42 minutes of action for a player Al-Hilal invested heavily in to join the division in the summer of 2023.
Despite being at the club for 18 months, he has still almost incredibly only taken the field seven times, but that hasn’t stopped him cashing in on his eye-watering pay packet.
According to data from France’s Foot Mercato, Neymar is said to have been paid a whopping £84.6 million (€101 million) for his troubles throughout 2024.
Following his injury-related inactivity last season, Neymar has seen his transfer value take a significant hit.
Neymar reportedly earned a whopping £84.6m for just 42 minutes of action in 2024
The Brazilian legend was cruelly limited on the pitch after suffering a cruciate ligament injury
Reports had hinted that Al-Hilal were considering ripping up his contract due to his fitness issues
At the end of 2024, his market value was around £12.6 million, according to Transfermarkt, a far cry from the £200 million PSG paid for the forward in 2017.
He finished 2023 with a value of around £37 million, meaning he is the sixth player in terms of transfer value decline in 2024, according to Transfermarkt data.
Given his inactivity, reports had emerged in November that Al-Hilal were considering breaking the player’s contract and cutting losses.
The report claimed that the club have increasing doubts about the role Neymar could play in the final six months of the season, with his £130 million-a-year contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Neymar is currently one of eight foreign players over the age of 21 in Al-Hilal’s squad, putting the club at the limit of foreign imports under Saudi Pro League rules.
The remaining seven players have become key parts of the squad in Neymar’s absence, leaving the Brazilian’s future in doubt.
A termination of his contract would offer Neymar the chance to return to Brazil, where he has been linked with a return to Santos, where he had his breakthrough.
The star has also been tipped to reunite with his former teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at MLS side Inter Miami, with the trio forming a legendary attacking force during their time at Barcelona.
