After a sumptuous Christmas meal, it's all too tempting to loosen your belt a notch to make room for all that excess.

But unbuttoning your pants at the dinner table is one of the worst mistakes we make at Christmas, a study has found.

Forgetting to wrap your gifts – or honestly being too lazy to do so – is another no-no that happens all too often.

Knowing your limit is also important – as one in seven of us admit to drinking more than we should on the big day.

The survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by tobacco-free nicotine company Haypp, found that as many as one in five of us loosen our waistbands at Christmas dinner.

And a quarter of us admit to putting on a cheap jumper on December 25 – just like Colin Firth in Bridget Jones's Diary.

Another 15 percent even add Christmas accessories, such as a headband or earrings. Equally egregious is leaving the dinner table for a cigarette, which 10 percent of us do, while one in twenty even vapes in other people's homes.

Other blunders include re-gifting and not including a courtesy gift for the host.

Etiquette expert Laura Ceccherini-Windsor said: 'Unbuttoning your trousers is certainly not an elegant gesture.

'Christmas is always an eventful time and your faux pas won't be forgotten in a hurry!

“So it's better to take it easy.”

She said of cheap sweaters: “It's always fun to convey your enthusiasm and positivity, but when you're rummaging through your sweater drawer, remember that less is always more.”
