Jose Mourinho has been sacked for the sixth time in his career after being sacked by Roma on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old was suspended by the Italian side after a disappointing season that saw Roma languish in ninth place in Serie A.

Mourinho’s contract at Roma expired at the end of the current season and it was believed that he had asked for a new contract.

But they have decided to part ways with the Portuguese, who had been sacked five times before his latest dismissal.

Mourinho is said to have earned around £80m just from being sacked by clubs during his career.

Chelsea have paid him more than £26 million alone, with Mourinho pocketing £18 million when he was sacked at Stamford Bridge in 2007 and £8.3 million after his second dismissal in 2015.

He also received a £17 million payout from Real Madrid and almost £20 million from Manchester United when he was offloaded in December 2018 – just months after signing a new two-year contract until 2020.

JOSE’S PAYOUTS

Chelsea (1st time) – £18 million

Real Madrid – £17 million

Chelsea (2nd time) – £8.3 million

Manchester United – £19.6 million

Tottenham – £15 million

Rome – £3 million

An ill-fated seventeen-month spell at Tottenham also ended in dismissal and a healthy compensation of £15 million. He had two years left on his deal at Spurs when he was shown the door.

His payout from Roma is likely to only be around £3 million as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mourinho’s total dwarfs other managerial payouts. Antonio Conte, the Portuguese’s bitter rival, is said to have earned around £37 million in compensation during his career.

This includes a whopping £26million when he was sacked by Chelsea in 2018.

Chelsea also paid £13.6m to Luis Felipe Scolari in 2009 and £13m to Thomas Tuchel in 2022.

Laurent Blanc received £17 million after his dismissal from PSG in 2017, which is reportedly the fourth highest managerial payout of all time.

Mourinho’s last game in charge was Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to AC Milan – which he had to watch from the stands due to suspension – meaning the Stadio Olympico side had won just one of their past six league games.

In total, Roma have won just eight of their 20 Serie A games this season and are behind the likes of Lazio, Bologna, Atalanta and Fiorentina in the race for European qualification.

In a statement, Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said: ‘We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and commitment since joining the club.

“We will always have fond memories of his time at Roma, but we believe an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”

Mourinho joined Roma in May 2021 and served in the role for two and a half years, leading them to the Europa Conference League title in 2022, the club’s first European trophy since 1961.

Last season he also guided them to the Europa League final before they were defeated on penalties by Sevilla.

Mourinho’s contract expired at the end of this season and before Roma’s announcement on Tuesday, speculation about his future was mounting.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss won 68 of his 138 games but was repeatedly at the center of disciplinary problems.

His immediate future in the game is unclear as he has now been released by his last four clubs.
