The date for Newcastle United’s already postponed Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon has been thrown into further doubt after the pitch at Plough Lane was badly damaged.

The Magpies were due to travel to the League Two club on Tuesday for their third round clash.

However, the court is currently unplayable and part of it has been damaged after heavy rainfall caused flooding in Wimbledon.

And photos taken of the field on Monday showed the true extent of the damage: in one corner the field resembled a golf course, rather than a field suitable for soccer.

It has left both clubs with a headache about when and where to play the match, and further communication is awaited. That headache is compounded by the fact that the pitch does not look ready to host a match next week, with Wimbledon already playing at home on Saturday and Tuesday.

Eddie Howe’s pre-match press conference was cancelled 25 minutes before he was due to speak to the media on Monday morning.

On Saturday Newcastle will play against Manchester City and a week later, before the international break, they will play against Everton.

Wimbledon play Crewe next Tuesday in the league. There is no room for a re-division before the autumn break.

According to the rules of the Carabao Cup, a neutral venue may be used if necessary. There is also the possibility that the match will be played on the dates reserved for the fourth round.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Leicester City are also expected to be in action midweek.

A popular podcast about the League Two club, The Wombles had a Dream, claims that even the dressing rooms at Wimbledon flooded after pumps at the stadium failed.

The floods come amid Britain’s ‘mega storm’. Commuters faced a chaotic start to the week today, with delays caused by heavy downpours causing ‘significant’ flooding and travel chaos on Monday morning.

Roads were flooded and train tracks were blocked after almost a month’s worth of rain fell in some areas around London and the Home Counties between midnight and 8am.

Four London Underground lines were partially out of service this morning due to flooding: the Bakerloo, District, Metropolitan and Piccadilly. The Overground was also partially shut down.

The Met Office has issued an orange warning for parts of central and southwest England until 9pm, amid concerns that flooded roads could cut off some communities.

A wider yellow warning is in place all day today for parts of Wales, much of southern England, the Midlands and North West England and Yorkshire.

Up to 120 mm (4.7 inches) of rain could fall in some affected areas today, and meteorologists warn that further weather warnings may be issued later this week.
