Gareth Southgate remains under fire as a struggling England side continue to fawn over deception at Euro 2024, but he continues to break new ground in the hot seat.

He was spared as the Three Lions fought back from a near-elimination in the last 16 to beat Slovakia, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane both scoring.

Southgate’s side were seconds away from a shock defeat before Bellingham’s stunning bicycle kick sent the match into extra time.

Harry Kane headed in the winning goal shortly after half-time to secure a quarter-final clash with Switzerland and likely save the manager from his sacking.

And there was more good news for Southgate after he set a new record.

In fact, it has emerged that he has now won more knockout matches at major tournaments – seven – than all other England managers put together since 1966.

Since taking charge in 2016, Southgate has overseen knockout victories against the likes of Colombia, Croatia and Germany at two World Cups and Euro 2020.

In fact, the 57-year-old has won seven of his 11 major knockout matches at the helm, losing only to Croatia and Belgium in 2018, Italy in 2020 and France in 2022.

Excluding the penalty shootout wins, Southgate has won six, twice as many as any other Three Lions manager and more than the great Sir Bobby Robson.

A succession of bosses have coached England during that time, including Terry Venables, Glenn Hoddle, Steve McLaren and Fabio Capello, but all have failed to win silverware.

And while Southgate is still waiting for his first trophy, his record of seven knockout wins between 2018 and 2024 exceeds the six he achieved between 1968 and 2016.

After the match on Sunday, he stressed that he was confident his team would get a result.

Southgate said: ‘It’s strange but I never had the feeling that tonight would be the end of our tournament.

‘Even with the long throw you felt there was hope. We might cause some chaos and something might fall. I didn’t expect the finish to be as it was!

“With fifteen minutes to go you think Jude is on his feet and we need to take him off and put on new legs.

“But you know what impact he can have on a game and in those moments you stay with him at that moment.”
