With just over two weeks to go until Christmas Day finally arrives, many excited Brits will be decorating their homes with festive decorations.

But although they may look nice, they can harm your broadband.

A new report from Uswitch has revealed which festive items can stop your signal.

“It's definitely not the holiday season without streaming your favorite Christmas movie,” said Richard Dowden, broadband expert at Uswitch.com.

“So it's good to be aware of the impact a piece of decoration or fairy lights can have on your broadband.”

According to Uswitch, classic Christmas decorations including fairy lights, tinsel, and even the tree itself can affect broadband speeds.

“Although they are beautiful, lights and decorations may slow down your connection speeds,” Mr Dowden explained.

“You should keep it and other electronic devices such as lamps, speakers, TVs, and monitors as far away from the router as possible.”

Although you might think that Uswitch is a bit of a curmudgeon regarding the situation, the company stresses that you don't need to sacrifice Christmas style for Wi-Fi.

“Don't cover your router in fairy lights and tinsel — try mixing it up with paper decorations or big oomph,” said Tara Slinger, an interior design expert who works with Uswitch.

“Second, make sure the tree itself is not blocking your router.”

'Moving a router is easier than moving a tree – so no problem if you've already got your tree in the way!

“Finally, no matter how you choose to decorate, remember to add a little personality – whether that's in an extreme style like me, or a simpler style.

“Enjoy your home this holiday season and don't miss a good WiFi signal!”

It's not just festive items that can cause problems with your broadband connection.

The placement of furniture and other electrical appliances in your home can also have an impact, Uswitch says.

“Be strategic when moving furniture, as placing large items next to your router can block your Wi-Fi signal and slow down your broadband speed,” Mr Dowden added.

“If you need to make room for your tree, try moving it away from your router.

“Other electrical devices in your home can interfere with your Wi-Fi connection.

“You should keep it, and other electronic devices such as lamps, speakers, TVs and monitors, as far away from the router as possible.”
