Manchester United missed out on a major transfer market during the summer transfer window despite the club’s heavy spending, it has emerged.

Erik ten Hag brought in five new players before the market closed, filling several positions in his squad in a bid to win more trophies.

Striker Joshua Zirkzee joined from Bologna, before United beat Real Madrid to the sensational signing of talented central defender Leny Yoro from Lille.

The club wasn’t done yet: Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui were acquired from Bayern Munich in a double deal to strengthen the defense.

Combative midfielder Manuel Ugarte joined from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the transfer window to cap off a busy summer, taking the total fee to over £200m.

But it now appears that Ten Hag has not secured all his goals.

Fabrizio Romano reports that United were pursuing PSG’s Xavi Simons and had even gauged his availability before he joined the Netherlands for Euro 2024 earlier this summer.

Simons, 21, joined the Ligue 1 giants from Barcelona in 2022 but spent the 2022-23 season in his homeland with PSV Eindhoven. He made a permanent move to the Parc des Princes in the summer of 2023 but has struggled to get playing time.

The talent was soon loaned to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, returning to the same club for the second season in a row.

Romano has revealed that he did not join United because he preferred to return to Germany, which resulted in the deal with Leipzig.

However, it is said that he will embark on a new adventure in the summer of 2025, which could rekindle the interest of the Old Trafford hierarchy.
