A hilarious photo of a squirrel stuck in a tree has won the top prize at Nikon’s Comedy Wildlife Awards 2024.
The competition, which has been dubbed the ‘funniest and most popular photography competition in the world’, concluded last night.
This year, more than 9,000 photos were submitted, and the judges whittled them down to a shortlist of just 45 photos.
However, it was Milko Marchetti who was named the overall winner of this year’s competition for his photo, entitled ‘Stuck Squirrel’.
The hilarious photo shows a red squirrel entering a tree with its feet perpendicular to the trunk.
“I have taken many photos of squirrels in Italy over the years, in many situations,” Mr. Marchetti explains.
‘But I thought this one was really funny and such a strange position, because it’s that exact moment when the squirrel releases its hind legs from the trunk to crawl into its skin.
‘Whenever I show this image at my local photography club’s nature seminars, the audience always erupts in raucous laughter, so I had to get in!’
