Revealed: Keely Hodgkinson’s BIZARRE recovery outfit that helped power the Team GB star to Olympic 800m glory in Paris

Keely Hodgkinson has lifted the lid on the Nike super technology that helped her become Olympic 800m champion.

The 22-year-old wore state-of-the-art heated boots and an all-in-one ice and heat vest to aid her recovery between rounds in Paris, joking that it made her look like a “robot.”

The ‘pre-covery’ kit, created in collaboration with recovery technology experts Hyperice, is not currently available to the public but is expected to be released at a later date.

It is already used by Nike’s most famous athletes, including basketball superstar LeBron James and world sprint champion Sha’Carri Richardson.

Nike x Hyperice vests provide instant heating and cooling, allowing athletes to adjust their body temperature during warm-ups and cool-downs. The Nike x Hyperice boots provide heat and air compression massages to athletes’ feet and ankles.

“They’re very new to me,” Hodgkinson said. “I literally got them a couple of days ago. It was nice of them to give them to me to try.

‘The vest is heat and ice, so you push one button for heat, push one button for ice. After an ice bath I was cold, so I used the heat.

“The shoes are a form of compression and warmth. They should be good for recovery. Nike always tries to be at the forefront of recovery strategies.”

Athletes warm up to increase body temperature and thus increase blood flow to the muscles to reduce the risk of injury. They cool down after competition to allow heart rate and blood pressure to slowly recover to pre-exercise levels.

The new Nike vest uses thermoelectric coolers that heat and cool directly without the need for ice or liquid. It contains thermal modules with sensors that monitor and maintain body temperature. An air bladder and pressure sensor inside the vest adapt to the body by pushing thermal modules inward.

The shoe features dual air bladders, connected to heating elements that distribute heat evenly. It is designed to drive heat deep into the muscles and tissues of the foot and ankle, allowing athletes to move, perform and recover much faster.

Athletes who have worn the shoe say their feet and ankles feel freer and lighter, as if they have already completed their warm-up. They can synchronize the warmth and compression of both shoes with the push of a button.

“Recovery is an important part of every athlete’s journey, but we hear from athletes that the concept of ‘pre-covery’ is just as important,” said Tobie Hatfield, senior director of Nike Athlete Innovation.

‘The shoes and vest we developed together with Hyperice help prepare the body for activity.’
