Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly earned a higher salary than three current Manchester United first-team players when he served in an ambassadorial role at the club.
It was reported on Tuesday morning that US minority owner INEOS has decided to terminate Ferguson’s multi-million contract as global club ambassador and club director.
Ferguson took on the role after stepping down as manager in 2013 following a glittering 26-year reign at Old Trafford.
He was reportedly paid £2.16 million a year to serve as global ambassador for the club in a deal that lasted more than a decade.
His salary at the club is just under £40,000 per week, which is reportedly double the weekly wage of United’s rising star Kobbie Mainoo.

Ferguson reportedly earned double what United’s star midfielder Kobbie Mainoo earns in a year
The midfielder is the side’s lowest earner, earning just over £1million a year, despite his stellar breakthrough last season.
Mainoo’s current contract came into effect in February 2023. Since then, he has become a mainstay in Erik ten Hag’s midfield. Since the start of last season he has made 44 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Records also show that Ferguson also earned more than both Amad Diallo and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir while working as an ambassador.
Diallo, who has broken into the starting line-up this season, earns £29,000 a week, while Bayinder earns £35,000.
However, Ferguson’s salary amounts to 10.7 percent of Bruno Fernandes’ annual income at United, which equates to a staggering £19.5 million.
The United captain is the highest earner at £375,000 after signing a new three-year contract in August.

Ratcliffe and INEOS are now no longer prepared to continue payments to Ferguson
Despite his problems, Casemiro is not far behind him, earning a hefty £350,000 a week, which equates to £18.2 million a year.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount can also be considered high earners at the club with salaries of £300,000 and £250,000 respectively.
Overall, Ferguson’s salary while working as an ambassador at the club amounted to just 0.3 percent of the club’s annual turnover of £662 million.
However, Athletic Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s claim had told Ferguson that the club is no longer willing to continue the payments as they look to reduce costs.
It was claimed that the termination of the agreement was handled amicably, with Ferguson remaining as non-executive director and welcome to attend matches.
Antony earns more than £10million a year despite his troubles since arriving in Manchester in 2022
INEOS began an in-depth financial investigation after acquiring a quarter of the club’s shares earlier this year. Mail Sport revealed this led to around 250 redundancies.
However, players like Antony, who has contributed 17 goals in 86 appearances for United, earn £10.4 million a year.
