Republican suggests white descendants of northern Civil War soldiers should get reparations

A Republican luxury car salesman seeking to challenge Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio has suggested that Northern white descendants of Civil War soldiers should be eligible for reparations.

Bernie Moreno, 55, of Westlake – a Cleveland suburb – hopes to beat Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who has been in the November polls since 2007.

As he continues his Buckeye state campaign, he stopped in Milford on Tuesday and told residents he believed descendants of Northerners who fought in the Civil War should receive reparations.

The Colombian-born candidate said descendants “stand on the shoulders of giants” such as James Madison and George Washington, and “that this group of people took on the greatest empire in history.”

“They said no, we will not stand for this. And won,” Moreno said at the Milford rally. “That same group of people later, white people, died to free black people. It’s never happened before in human history, but it happened here in America. That’s not taught much in schools, is it?

Where are the reparations for the people of the North who died to save the lives of black people?’ he said

They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country. Name a country that did that: that freed slaves, died to do that. You know, they talk about reparations. Where are the reparations for the people of the North who died to save the lives of black people?’

Recently, California has debated giving reparations to black citizens who are descendants of slaves and could receive up to $360,000. The discussion has drawn criticism on both sides – from those eligible who claim the amount is too low to critics who say they shouldn’t be getting anything.

Moreno, who already has Donald Trump’s endorsement, is the second GOP candidate to jump into the race and will run against Ohio State Senator Matt Dolan for Brown’s spot.

Brown’s spot in 2024 is in jeopardy as Ohio – which has historically been known as a swing state and has become increasingly red, supported Trump in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Trump backed Moreno on Truth Social earlier this month, saying he won’t be “easy to beat.”

Last year, JD Vance – Trump’s candidate of choice – was elected to the Senate.

On April 12, the former president took to Truth Social to support the immigrant, writing, “Word is the Bernie Moreno, the most respected businessman from the GREAT STATE of OHIO, and the father-in-law of a wonderful young congressman, Max Miller, is considering running for office. to be presented to the Senate. He wouldn’t be easy to beat, especially against Brown, one of the worst in the Senate!’

Moreno, who shared the post on his Twitter page, wrote: “Thank you sir!”

Moreno has also posted pro-Trump campaign media, including where he claimed he was a “pro-Trump legal immigrant.”

The Colombian-born candidate has already released pro-Trump campaign materials and claims he is a “pro-Trump legal immigrant.” He emigrated to the United States when he was five

“Illegals come for the freebies, free money from Biden, and to take your job away, and free crime tickets,” said the Colombian immigrant, who came to the United States at the age of five. They are changing our nations, let’s stop them.

“Build the wall and make English our official language, let’s defend our country.”

He posted a photo of himself and his wife with Trump at a 2021 event for his in-law politician Max Miller.

“It is no coincidence that President Donald J Trump chose Ohio for his first rally of 2021. We were honored to welcome him!” read the message.
