Republican files articles of IMPEACHMENT against Kamala Harris as she is urged to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office
A Republican has filed articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris over her handling of the southern border and for hiding the truth about President Joe Biden’s “cognitive well-being.”
Since Harris became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he has faced attacks from all sides from the Republican Party.
Republicans accuse her of “covering up” the president’s cognitive decline and are demanding she invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office.
The 25th Amendment, which outlines the presidential line of succession, gives the vice president and the Cabinet the power to remove the commander in chief from office if it is determined that he or she is no longer fit to serve. Under Section 4, a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate is required to determine that the president is “unable to discharge” his or her “powers and duties.”
The first article of impeachment filed by Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., “willful refusal to enforce immigration laws,” stems from her alleged “negligence” regarding border security and immigration law as “border czar.”
The second article of impeachment, “breach of public trust,” alleges that Harris “willfully misled” the public and Congress about Biden’s “physical and cognitive well-being.”
Tennessee Republican Rep. Andy Ogles has filed articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris over her handling of the southern border and her insistence that Joe Biden was the right fit for the top of the Democratic ticket.
Since Biden dropped out of the presidential race, Republicans have again criticized Harris’ reputation as Biden’s “border czar” — during an administration that has seen record numbers of illegal border crossings.
Biden appointed Harris early in his administration to address the “root causes” of immigration.
Since Biden and Harris took office, illegal immigration to the U.S. has exploded to over 8 million people, and is expected to reach 10 million by the end of September.
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., introduced a resolution Monday condemning “Kamala Harris’ role as Joe Biden’s ‘border czar,’ which has led to the most catastrophic open borders crisis in history.”
And calls for the 25th Amendment have grown as Biden battled for 6 days in Delaware over a COVID-19 diagnosis and the biggest decision of his life hanging over his head.
The president eventually bowed to public pressure and dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, nearly a month after his disastrous performance at the debate.
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, introduced a resolution shortly after the debate calling on Harris to “convene the Cabinet and declare that President Joe Biden is unable to discharge his duties as Commander in Chief.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Monday that he is still considering whether to bring the resolution to the House floor.
Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tennessee, has called on Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment and on Tuesday filed articles of impeachment for the vice president’s failure to enforce border laws.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) wrote a letter to all of Biden’s cabinet members urging them to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Harris has faced attacks from all sides of the GOP since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee
“If President Biden is willing to concede that he can no longer be the Democratic nominee for president after the primaries due to his health, then he cannot continue to be president until January 20, 2025,” Schmitt said in the letters.
“If President Biden is willing to concede that after the primaries he can no longer be the Democratic nominee for president due to his health, then he cannot continue to be president until January 20, 2025,” Schmitt said in the letters.
Democrats have ridiculed this idea.
“That’s a Jim Crow-era tactic,” Congressman Jonathan Jackson (D-Ill.) told DailyMail.com.
“Let the American people speak. Let’s vote. And I think it should also be about whether someone who has been convicted as a felon has the right to live in public housing, which is the White House.”
“Totally stupid,” Democratic caucus vice chairman Ted Lieu told DailyMail.com of the tactic.
‘[Biden] “If he has done a phenomenal job as president, he will continue to do a phenomenal job as president. The fact that he has chosen not to run for re-election has nothing to do with the fact that he is president now.”
The fact that their calls are likely to fall on deaf ears within the Cabinet did not deter Republicans.
“We cannot have a commander in chief who is responsible for the nuclear codes and who is dealing with the level of cognitive decline that we are seeing in President Biden,” said Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.), calling for the 25th Amendment.
“The 25th Amendment is looking pretty good right now,” Rep. Nancy Mace, Republican, said on X, responding to a clip of Biden caught on camera for the first time in six days.
“She lied then, and she will lie again. Joe Biden is unfit to run for president and therefore unfit to serve as president, but Vice President Harris lied to the American people and covered it up. We must invoke the 25th Amendment immediately,” Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., wrote on X.
Congress cannot invoke the 25th Amendment — the Cabinet and the vice president must agree. The resolution would only increase pressure on them to do so.
Yet it appears that even moderate Republicans would offer little resistance to such a drastic step.
“It’s a sad situation and I feel sorry for the president,” Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, Republican of Pennsylvania, told DailyMail.com. “I just hope he can govern.
“I think it’s perfectly reasonable for someone to ask whether the president is unfit to govern,” said Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D.
“I think the president is much less than he was a few years ago. So I think the reason we have a 25th Amendment is clearly so that those in government who are closest to the president can make judgments about whether or not he is fit for duty, and I certainly hope that that judgment continues.”
