Report: Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL could be almost as big as the Galaxy S24 Ultra

Prototypes of the so-called Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL have surfaced on TikTok, revealing a noticeable size difference between the two.

The videos of the devices come from Ukraine PixoPhone channel; but it seems the footage has since been removed. Fortunately, news site YTechB were able to save them.

9To5Google’s The report states that you can tell they are prototypes because of the etchings on the back panel. These are used “by Google to identify prototype units.”

It’s hard to see them, since PixoPhone has covered them with a sticker, but you can see the edge of the etchings in certain shots. What’s interesting is the presence of the “G” logo, which indicates that the design we see here is close to the final release.

Possible specifications

As mentioned, the Pixel 9 Pro XL in the first video is larger than the Pixel 9. It’s not a huge difference in size, though the 9 Pro XL is larger than its counterpart. The TikTok videos don’t reveal any specs, as they’re focused on showcasing the devices. Previous rumors have suggested that the Pixel 9’s standard display will be 6.2 inches.

The size of the 9 Pro XL is unknown, with 9To5Google claiming it’s 6.73-inches. There is some evidence to support this claim, such as the second PixoPhone video, which compares the prototype to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The two are a similar size, though the S24 Ultra, which has a 6.8-inch display, is slightly larger.

It’s important to note that the camera bar on the 9 Pro XL is longer than the standard model. There’s enough room for three lenses, an LED light for the flash, and what appears to be a temperature sensor. The Pixel 8 Pro has a similar setup. On the Pixel 9, you’ve just got two lenses and the light.

Design flourishes

Going back to the first clip, the PixoPhone shows off design differences other than their dimensions. The Pixel 9 has a glossy back panel, “while the 9 Pro XL opts for a less fingerprint-prone matte finish.” Interestingly, their respective sides have the opposite coating.

The base phone’s edges have a matte finish, but the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s are glossy. We’re not sure if Google opted to give each device its own look in an attempt to stand out to prospective buyers.

Of course, there’s always a chance that none of the design flourishes seen on these prototypes will make it into the final product. Google is holding its next Pixel event on August 13, where we can expect to see the tech giant’s next-generation hardware. Until then, take everything in this leak with a grain of salt.
