Repair claims from electric vehicle owners have increased by 370 percent in the past three years, according to figures from specialist warranty company MotorEasy.
It said: ‘The growth, while partly explained by an increase in the number of EVs MotorEasy now has under warranty, also reflects an aging EV fleet, with issues now beginning to emerge.’
In 2021 it stated that the average MG electric range claim was £430 (MG4 EV). That has now increased fivefold to £2,200.
Increase: In 2021, MotorEasy said the average claim for MG’s electric range was £430 (MG4 EV, pictured)
“A similar trend can also be seen at Tesla, with claims costs increasing by 231 percent since 2021,” the report said.
Duncan McClure Fisher, CEO of MotorEasy’s parent company Intelligent Motoring, says: ‘While the perception remains that EVs have fewer moving parts and less to go wrong with them, in reality we see an equivalent mix of failures as petrol and diesel vehicles. ‘
Toyota’s 3,000 electric cars for games
Toyota will supply almost 3,000 cars for next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, all ‘electrified’.
These include: 500 zero-emission Mirai electric cars with hydrogen fuel cells, pictured; 1,000 battery-electric cars, like the oddly named bZ4X and Lexus RZ; 845 self-charging and 176 plug-in petrol-electric hybrids such as the RAV4; as well as 150 wheelchair-accessible purely electrical devices.

The fleet also includes the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, Yaris Cross and Highlander, all with hybrid electric technology.
Toyota says it aims to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles at the 2024 Games by 50 percent compared to previous Olympics, adding: “Around 60 percent of the fleet will have zero tailpipe emissions.”
After the Games, all Mirai vehicles will become part of the French capital’s hydrogen taxi fleet, increasing the number of electric fuel cell models to 1,500.
