Reliance Industries Ltd, India’s most valuable company, plans to commission its first gigasolar plant this year as part of its shift to green energy, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Thursday.

The solar giga factory will include the production of PV modules, cells, wafers and ingots, polysilicon and glass in a single location. The modules convert sunlight into electricity.

In his speech at the annual shareholders meeting, he said the first train with a capacity of 20 GW of solar PV (photovoltaic energy) “will start production at the end of this year”.

The company also aims to industrialize MW-level sodium-ion cell production by 2025 and test the first 50 MWh per year lithium-ion battery cells in 2026.

Reliance in 2021 announced plans to invest $10 billion over the next three years to develop a new fuels business, based on 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The plan involves building four gigafactories for the production of renewable equipment, battery storage, fuel cells and hydrogen in Jamnagar in Gujarat.
