A father allegedly tortured his seven-month-old son with an “offensive instrument” for months before he and the boy’s mother killed him.
South African-born Reinhardt Bosch, 33, and German-born Noemi Kondacs, 22, appeared before the Brisbane Magistrates Court Friday via video link after being charged with one charge each of murder and torture of their child, Rhuan Immanuel.
Youth care worker Bosch is also charged with assault with physical injuries.
Ambulance workers had called the police to the house on Mount Samson Road in Yugar, north of Brisbane, around 6:45 a.m. Thursday on Thursday after determining that the boy had stopped responding.
“After a briefing from my officers, it was simply the most appalling and confrontational scene a police officer could ever encounter,” Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told ABC radio on Friday.

The couple, who were reportedly very religious, were taken into custody at the place where the child had died, police said.
According to police, the father used the unidentified instrument on the child from April to November for almost his entire life.
Court documents allege Bosch tortured and assaulted Rhuan while armed with an offensive instrument, inflicting bodily harm on him between April 11 and November 2.
He and the Kondacs are said to have killed the baby on Nov. 2, before his body was found by paramedics the next morning.
It is alleged that the parents prayed for the child for his recovery until they called an ambulance when he became unresponsive.
Ambulance workers called police at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at a house on Mount Samson Road in Yugar, north of Brisbane, after finding the boy unresponsive.
“At this stage, we have no information to indicate that the child has underlying health problems,” Detective Superintendent David Jackman said Thursday.
“The investigation has revealed injuries to the child that are sufficient for us to charge a murder charge.”
Bosch made the first call to paramedics, Det Insp Jackman said.
The couple was not previously known to the police, and neither was the address.

Mark Platt of Sun and Co Lawyers represented the co-defendant during their brief mentions and said alternative representation is being sought for Kondacs.
Bosch and Kondacs spoke only when asked if they could hear the judge.
Bosch faces additional charges for assault with bodily harm.
The Magistrates Court has no jurisdiction to hear bail requests for murder and their cases were adjourned until December 5.
