Regal in ruby! Queen Máxima of the Netherlands stuns in a velvet gown with lace detailing at a state banquet in Amsterdam for the South Korean president and first lady

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands stunned in a ruby red ball gown with lace and velvet paneling as she welcomed some very special guests to the country together with King Willem-Alexander at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam this evening.

The Dutch king and queen held a state banquet for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee, who are currently on a state visit to the Netherlands – just a month after being received in Britain by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Queen Máxima attended the state banquet tonight and shone in a floor-length dress with long sleeves, a full skirt and lace inserts.

The super-stylish royal wore her thick blonde locks in a sleek bun and accessorized with a dazzling tiara.

Meanwhile, the South Korean first lady oozed glamor in a chic black dress with statement sleeves.

The state banquet comes after King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima celebrated a special occasion closer to home last week: their eldest daughter, Crown Princess Amalia, celebrated her twentieth birthday.

This weekend, the Princess of Orange posted a heartfelt message of gratitude to fans on social media for wishing her many happy returns.

She thanked the well-wishers in a statement on the Dutch royal family's Instagram account, accompanied by a black and white photo of her.

The princess, who has two younger sisters Alexia and Ariane, celebrated her twentieth birthday on Thursday.

In the message of thanks, the future Dutch queen said: 'Thank you very much for all the congratulations I received on the occasion of my twentieth birthday. All the heartwarming messages made my day even more special.'

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima raised their eldest daughter as privately as possible during their youth, despite the fact that she was the heir to the throne.

However, now that she is an adult and her role is changing, she is more in the spotlight.

Earlier this year, the Dutch monarch appeared on a podcast in which he revealed that he does not shield his three daughters from the “reality” of their lives in the public eye.

In an interview on the podcast Through the Eyes of the King, reported by the NL Times, he said: 'They are not blind and deaf, they see everything on social media, they read everything, they hear everything. We do not exclude them from anything. And they talk about it.'

“It affects them,” he added, saying that he has also had to learn to deal with negative comments on social media during his time in the public eye.

The monarch explained that he encourages his daughters not to see criticism on social media as a personal attack, saying it was “very annoying” for growing children to see the criticism appear online.

'Children have no filter on that, but it is reality and they have to learn to deal with it.'

He said it's important to teach his children not to take things personally because, for the most part, he believes online trolling isn't personal.

Elsewhere, Willem-Alexander said in the podcast that he hopes his eldest daughter can spend time with herself and her family before she becomes monarch in the 'distant future'.

He said he wished the heir to the throne plenty of time to prepare for the role so she can start a family or do whatever she wants.

He then revealed that he would sit down with his daughter to decide together when she will take the throne, but added that it was a decision to be made “between Amalia and me.”
