Reese Witherspoon explains why she focuses on ‘optimistic stuff that makes girls excited to be women’ and doesn’t care about being ‘in the cool kid club’

Reese Witherspoon spoke about her preference for working on “optimistic” projects during a panel discussion at Hello Sunshine’s first Shine Away Event on Saturday.

The 47-year-old Legally Blonde actress revealed that she’s made a conscious decision to take part in lighter projects throughout her career — because she wants to work on projects that “get girls excited about being women in this world.”

The Oscar winner, who recently became emotional while discussing her second divorce, also said she “didn’t want to be the cool kid club” of those who star in “dark, intense horror films.”

She said, “I’m not supposed to make dark, heavy, intense, heavy horror, gory, dark movies… I don’t want to be in the cool kids club,” she said.

The Walk The Line star said her fans expected her to focus on comedy projects and that she was comfortable working in light-hearted genres.

The star won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2006 for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line.

The actress’s most recent role in a film was in the romantic comedy Your Place Or Mine, for which she also served as a producer.
