Chelsea captain Reece James returned to first-team training on Friday after his latest hamstring setback which has sidelined him for more than a month.
James did not complete the full session as the club wants to rebuild him rather than rush his rehabilitation, but it is an important step in the 25-year-old’s recovery.
This is welcome news at a time when Chelsea are struggling with defensive injuries, with Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana sidelined until at least January, and Romeo Lavia is struggling to be fit against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
James is not expected to be included in any of Chelsea’s matchday squads until after the New Year as they look to guide the captain back to healthy fitness.
His last appearance came on 10 November in a 1–1 draw against Arsenal.
Maresca’s side can go to the top of the Premier League by beating Everton, if only temporarily, as Liverpool will take on Tottenham immediately afterwards.

Maresca said, “If they’re not playing games, they’re probably thinking about leaving. But then we’ll see.
‘It’s a different situation for every player. So we’ll see if some of them come knocking on my door to say they want to leave, but it depends. We will try to find a solution.’
